Learn how to appeal your property tax assessment
Wednesday, August 01, 2018, 06:30pm

Dear Neighbor,

Learn how to appeal your property tax assessment and possibly lower your tax bill at a special workshop sponsored by Cook County Board of Review Commissioner Michael Cabonargi, Cook County Commissioner and Larry Suffredin.

The assessed value of your property is one of the factors that determine the amount of property taxes you pay. This assessed value is determined by the Cook County Assessor and is updated every three years. This year was Rogers Park’s turn to be reassessed.

On average, the assessed value of property in Rogers Park increased by a little over 19%, but in some cases the percentage increase was much higher.

If you believe your assessment is too high, you can appeal your assessment to both the Assessor and the Cook County Board of Review.  The time for appealing your assessment to the Assessor’s office has passed, but you can still appeal to the Board of Review. Even if you appealed to the Assessor’s office and received a reduction in your assessment, you may receive an additional reduction at the Board of Review.

If you own property in Rogers Park Township (Devon to the Evanston border, Kedzie to the Lake), you have until FRIDAY, AUGUST 31st, to submit an appeal to the Cook County Board of Review.

At the workshop, you will learn how the assessment process works, how to file a Board of Review appeal and how an appeal is granted.  Please bring your property tax bill in order to more efficiently file an appeal.  Staff from Commissioner Cabonargi’s office will be available to answer questions and help complete appeal forms.

If you are unable to attend the workshop, the Cook County Board of Review website provides an overview of the property tax appeal process, including step-by-step instructions on how to appeal your assessment online.

Make sure you file your appeal before the Friday, August 31st deadline.

Location Willye White Park Fieldhouse, 1610 W. Howard (at Ashland).
