Chicago may be woefully behind the times when it comes to city recycling services, but your Association can make a positive impact by establishing its own recycling program.  Recycling will even earn you a rebate from the city.

From blue bags to blue carts, Chicago’s efforts to create a city-wide recycling initiative fall short when compared to other major cities.  Our four-unit building still does not receive recycling services from the city—we collect our recyclables and drop them off at a recycling center.  But buildings over 4 units are required to pay for private refuse collection, and as a result they have a number of options for providing recycling services to the building.

Some waste haulers allow residents to collect their recyclables in blue bags (which must be purchased) and throw the bags in with their regular waste.  Others provide post-collection sorting, which allows residents to mingle recycling & regular waste in the same bags.  The most effective system provides separate containers for recyclables.

Buildings that have a recycling program in place are eligible to file for the City of Chicago Refuse Rebate.  The City will reimburse Associations up to $75/unit for waste hauling & recycling costs.  Yet another great reason to green your building!

Whatever option you choose for your building’s recycling needs, be sure to educate your owners about your recycling program.  Include the information in your Owner Handbook, and post information in the common areas.

Recycling takes a bit of effort on everyone’s part, but it’s a relatively simple way to make a positive contribution to your community.
